HVW8 presents: Brian Lotti – Park Life, first ever solo exhibition in Berlin

Park Life — A solo exhibition by Brian Lotti

HVW8 Gallery Berlin is pleased to present ‘Park Life’, an exhibition of new monotypes and paintings from Brian Lotti. Based out of Los Angeles, home to a famous sky that attracted both the entertainment industry and a myriad of West Coast landscape painters because of the quality of light, this attribute finds itself and its many characteristics alive in Lotti’s work.

Opening: April 27, 2017, 7–10pm
Show runs: April 28 to June 17, 2017

Open through Gallery Weekend Berlin
Friday April 28, 4–9pm

HVW8 presents: Jean Jullien – Flat Out, a solo exhibition by the renowned French artist in Berlin

Flat Out — A solo exhibition by Jean Jullien

Graphic artist Jean Jullien applies his signature style to three-dimensional sculpture for the first time in the series of six steel artworks now displayed at HVW8 Berlin. The French graphic artist playfully explores the theme of laziness in soft brilliant-hued, life-sized figures that resolutely refuse to “do” much of anything. A keen observer of the everyday and current events, Jullien here focuses on moments of unadorned idleness that punctuate the hyperactivity of modern life.

Opening: April 27, 2017, 7–10pm
Show runs: April 28 to June 17, 2017

Open through Gallery Weekend Berlin
Friday April 28, 4–9pm
Saturday April 29, 12-7pm

Photographer Shaun Bloodworth R.I.P.

This is a flashback to our collaboration with the highly influential and talented photographer Shaun Bloodworth from Sheffield. He died last Wednesday, Sept 15th at the hospital after waiting for a liver transplant. Our friend Stuart from Give Up Art had organized a fundraiser the same night. There is no such thing as coincidence, so it turned out to be a celebration of Shaun’s life and light he had been spreading and living, with a musical line-up which read like the A-list of the British dance music underground.
We had featured Shaun in issue #02 and shown a few of his photographs. During his career he captured a huge part of (especially) the British electronic music scene but also abroad, his work was and is history-making for the dubstep movement. The appearance of Rinse FM or guys like Benga or Skream had been shaped by him – he created icons. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

“From Inside to Way Out” Festival: The Double Photo Exhibition “Peepal of the City”

Part of the festival at HAU will be a double photo exhibition – a collaboration between two young photographers: Karachi-based Khaula Jamil and Berlin-based Pablo Lauf.

“Much like the people of Karachi, the leaves of the Peepal tree (indigenous to the sub-continent) move continuously even when the air around them is still and no perceptible wind is blowing. Inspired by this energy seemingly found within, Karachi-based Khaula Jamil and Berlin-based Pablo Lauf collaborate to bring forth intriguing photographic stories of individuals from Karachi. Through their varying techniques, of the insider moving swiftly yet intimately through the lives of people she meets on the streets to the outsider spending days in closed spaces with each person he photographs, their perceptions clash and mesh with startling harmony, bringing forth a portrait of a city that just refuses to stop living.”

Festival at HAU Berlin: From Inside to Way Out

The brilliant cultural institution HAU – Hebbel am Ufer is hosting a three-day festival this weekend: From Inside to Way Out / Perspectives from Contemporary Pakistan is a three-day program with talks, films, music, photo exhibition, and more and presents a variety of artists who work in Karachi and Berlin and uncover surprising similarities between the two cities. The program is dealing with the degree to which cultural attributions are marked by clichés, here using the example of Pakistan.
Highlight will be a concert by a group of 12 musicians playing the “Karachi Files” – an album co-created by Berlin-based duo Gebrüder Teichmann and Forever South.

Read the full program here on the HAU website.

Check: Tauba Auerbach’s Incredible Pop-Up Book “[2,3]” With Printed Matter

We’re mega big fans of Tauba’s work. Here she took the idea of a pop-up book to a new level, inside of each book is one huge geometric paper sculpture. She is currently part of an exhibition for contemporary artists and architects at the SFMOMA and realized her new book 2,3 with NY indie publisher Printed Matter. Nowness created an unboxing video for this and we found it on Jux.

Stephen Powers Exhibition: Coney Island Is Still Dreamland (To a Seagull)

Reasons enough for me to visit NY is Stephen Powers’ upcoming show Coney Island Is Still Dreamland (To a Seagull) at the Brooklyn Museum, November 20, 2015–March 13, 2016.
Stephen aka ESPO: “I’ve been trying to write a few words for a few weeks now on the occasion of my doing a show at the Brooklyn Museum. I put in the work and wrote innumerable false starts, so now I know the right words are this: There are no words. I can only show, I can not tell. Come meet my train of thought when I arrive on November 20th.”

He released a new screen print in an edition of 40 (and 20 more with his pencil doodles) for the impatient.
