New Book: Sergei Sviatchenko — “Collages”

DSCF9132

I met Ukrainian artist Sergei Sviatchenko a couple of years ago on a magazine conference for indie publishers in Luxembourg. A very prolific and enthusiastic person and artist whose early output was based on collage which still remains central to his practice. He made excursions in abstract painting, photography always was and is a core element in his works. He founded Senko Studio in the early 2000s, a non-profit exhibition space in Viborg, Denmark. He is also running Close Up and Private, an Internet-based photography project dedicated to the visual language of classic style in clothing.

Sergei recently put out a new book with Vienna based publisher schleebrügge editor of which he sent me a copy. “Nice to hear from you, Jenne. I have been working on a book with Rick Poynor, it has been a wonderful journey for me. Partly because I had to go through my archive of the images, partly because of Rick´s knowledge in the world of images and his interest in my work.”

It is the first monograph to focus on the collage output of Sergei Sviatchenko, who still is a leading figure in the contemporary collage world and to quote his other publisher Gestalten from Berlin: “One of the most influential innovators of modern collage.” The book gathers his most significant work from the past decade and shares little seen collages from his early years in the Ukraine. Very good work!

Abstract Art: Guy van den Branden

DSCF8812

Early January I went to Antwerp for two days and had the chance to get an idea of the city and see some art. I randomly found the gallery Callewaert-Vanlangendonck while walking through these alleys and little streets of this beautiful city. They currently show works by the Belgian Constructivist Guy van den Branden, an artist with work of complete geometric abstraction, following in the footsteps of Piet Mondrian and Victor Vasarély.
These moments are always inspiring when I explore art that I have only known little about, but is having such a huge impact and appealing totally new. The works on display and the monograph they produced are really impressive and it’s great to meet people putting effort into not forgetting about the value of van den Branden’s art and not letting it disappear.
