Something Beautiful and Poignant Can Flow

It has been a bit quiet on this site due to a spot of work and spending the available free time with the offers of both big city and lakeside in the summertime. I also visited my friends next door at Hard Wax and came back with a bunch of new amazing records that soon will be heard on The Dusty Cabinets.

My friend Paul from tenmetal recently linked me to the work of John Paul Thurlow. “Extremely well illustrated magazine covers” he said, and yes, these are truly one of the best black & white illustrations I have seen in a long while. Not sure if it is the simple technique, the style, the idea or just that I am an addicted fan of magazines myself. It probably is all combined. Thurlows’ pencil drawings are perfect reinterpretations of magazine covers, “an attempt to create cover art for every great magazine I own (+ a few I wish I owned)”. As this is an ongoing project and the current headline post counts cover no. 76, I am curious about what he is coming up with. Watch the cover project on his “Covers” blog. More work of him to be found here.

The Dusty Cabinets Show is back again and keeps on discovering new and interesting music. It’s time for the second part of the dubstep mix ‘In A Silent Way’. To tie in with the last show, it starts again with a track from the awesome Finnish label Harmönia, then gets dark, straying somewhere in the oceanic depths, temporarily Losing Control and finally hits the road for some serious summer anthems (good for any other season as well). With tracks by Randy Barracuda & Mesak, A Made Up Sound, Robert Hood, Efdemin, (actually a lot of tracks by) Martyn aka 3024, Untold, Ramadanman and more … Enjoy!

Complete tracklists of Part IV & V – “In A Silent Way” / “In A More Silent Way” will be revealed soon. The cover artworks show captures of heavy summer rain, shot by the great part-time photographer Rakaethe. Check more of her very subtle and genuine work on this nice portfolio. An update of her site is in the works.

THIS IS THE FIRST Q+A since our relaunch in May 2009. John Osborn, who recently contributed to JB. with a mix for The Dusty Cabinets Show is now the first one in this new category. Osborn is a friendly guy from London, who has lived in Berlin for about a decade, he’s got a great sense of humor and an infinite passion for music and design. John is involved in a variety of projects, the lead singer of the post punk electro band Neon Man (Pale Music), owner of the design studio Studio Higgins. Osborn is hyperactive in a very relaxed way. I actually met him at a design agency, where we worked together on the development of a new magazine. After being out of touch for some time, our paths crossed again at work, and we found out once more that we are like-minded dudes with a large intersection in reference to music and design.

Here is a short conversation with Benjamin John Osborn. And all the way down at the end of this page is the tracklist to his Dusty Cabinets mix and a link to another DJ mix he did a few days ago!

Urban Affairs Extended – Stattbad Wedding, Berlin

Time is running fast but the interview with John Osborn is done and will be online in the next days. The same applies to The Dusty Cabinets Show, the second part of the Dubstep mix ‘In a Silent Way’. At this point, I can already confirm two of the next shows: first one by DJ Saap (Brontosaurus Rec), a long time friend and co-founder of the JB. Housemusic club events who is now residing in Frankfurt, holding a bi-monthly residency with Brontosaurus at the world famous club Robert Johnson. The other show will be a journey with Daniel & Maschat of The Whitest Boy Alive, to be recorded early September after their tour. Wow!

JB. on Flickr: Yes, we created a Flickr account to share the visual world of JB. in an appropriate way. It will be an ongoing collection of pictures & snapshots of found odds and ends, art, stories, excursions to outer-space, happiness or constant confusion … We will work on it for a steady growth. I recently added some pictures of the Urban Affairs Extended exhibition.

JB. now on Twitter: To complete the hyperactive behavior of JB. these days you can now follow us on Twitter for the intuitive movement.

Why don’t you submit some work and share it with us?! If you are a photographer, designer, illustrator, writer, artist or whatever and have work that is relevant to JB., please let us know and send us an email including your work and a brief description to this adress.
