BLU is an amazing artist and his animation videos are always mind-blowing. As it is again with his recent work he had done during Fame Festival in Italy, I have to share it here. Here you see the video of COMBO — a collaborative animation by Blu and David Ellis (2 times loop). Check this huge wall he painted there as well!

Coming up this week: JB. will participate in the show “Berliner Rille” on Herbstradio — Sept. 23rd, 4 pm CET. If you are in Berlin, tune in on 99.1 fm or check the live-streams on Herbstradio wherever you are.
In my case I had to record a mix for the show in advance. That was done at the Unknown Studio, thanks to Morten and his careful treatment of the sound. In case you miss this, the show will be available at JB. afterwards for sure. You will get a second chance to hear me as I will be on a show at Herbstradio early October, I’ll let you all know when the date is confirmed. So drop by and have a listen!

Joy Orbison (© Jayne Helliwell via FACT Magazine)
JB.’s mostly acclaimed tune throughout the whole summer, yes, that’s been Joy Orbison with his über-anthem “Hyph Mngo”. Finally released on the most prolific labels at this time, Hotflush Recordings, Paul Rose once again showed that he has obviously the right touch for magnificent appearences or emerging artists like Untold, Mount Kimbie or now Joy Orbison. His track is a killer, a perfectly drawn dance tune, it is surely predictable and very accessible, and as his first name reveals it simply puts you in a joyful mood.
One of the most hyped up tunes for 2009 long before its release, so this is what we have all waited for. Much of the stuff running under the term dubstep (to me a somehow diffuse term anyway) is dark, beefy, sometimes too intellectual and difficult to approach. This UK funky style is more close to garage and house music, yet a bit loud-mouthed, and that’s really catching me more. Stuff like Hessle Audio and Apple Pips are releasing. Orbison, who is the nephew of drum ‘n’ bass legend Ray Keith, announced releases on Aus Music and ‘BRKLY CLLN’ on his own imprint Doldrums.

Zomby sleeve of "One Foot Ahead Of The Other" on Ramp Recordings
The British exceptional musician Zomby is one of those artists who preferably stay anonymous, only photographed in a mask. His music remains tangible and this is enough, because his tracks are brilliant pieces with a highly visible reference to the days of early Rave. Actually his LP from 2008 on Werk Discs is called “Where Were You In ‘92?”.

Nice books and magazines at the Self Publishing Event, Motto/Chert Berlin
Past weekend was the “One Day Self Publishing Event” at Motto Berlin. 60 publishers from 18 countries, selected by Nieves, Rollo Press and Motto, were filling the spaces with their productions from small zines and magazines to artbooks in addition to the productions of Motto bookshop and Chert gallery. Motto is a distribution company specialized in magazines and fanzines mostly, with more than 400 titles in the catalogue. In December 2008, Alexis Zavialoff, the owner of Motto, opened a permanent bookstore in Berlin Kreuzberg, which is probably the most interesting and important shop in Berlin in this category, next to doyoureadme?! and Pro qm.
So much about independent publishing going on in Berlin these days, that I missed the event MISS READ at Kunstwerke, a three day kind of fair of international publishers. But there is still one place to go to: Kiosk — Modes of Multiplication is an archive of independent publication projects in the field of contemporary art since the beginning of the 90s. Initiator is Christoph Keller, a graphic designer and publisher, who is also a founder and former director of the publisher Revolver Books.

It's Nice That — Issue #2, Page Spreads

Doenerlounge was a legendary small party series in Berlin a few years ago where everybody had been playing from Mocky, Jamie Lidell, Modeselektor, Smith’n'Hack, The Bug, Suzi Wong, Mo + El Puma, Kevin Blechdom, Hanno Hinkelbein, Jim Avignon, Captain Comatose, Feadz, Tom Clark, Boris and lots more ……. started in July 2003 until it was closed in February 2004 after a police crackdown. No other venue or party series ever existed in Berlin afterwards that had been close to the uniqueness of Doenerlounge. Some stole the name though and tried to embrace the reputation that Cantürk once built up.
From today on (Sept. 2nd) he starts a radio show on HERBSTRADIO — A Free Cultural Radio for Berlin. The radiostation will go on air for three months and Cantürk organizes three shows a week called “Berliner Rille” until November. He invited me to do one of the label shows.
The date is September, 23rd at 4 pm, so JB. and The Dusty Cabinets Show will be on air that day playing favourites for one hour. You are all invited!
