The Relationship of Anselm Reyle & Berghain

Before I post a few shots of the Anselm Reyle show (@ CFA Berlin), check the equivalence of these two pictures. Two completely different settings: surrounding, noise level, idea, state, conciousness … Try to compare a visit in a sleek gallery on a weekday with a bathroom in club Berghain on a Sunday around 2 pm (will not post any details here…). I think the resemblance of these two pics is epic. The Berghain window has a more linear design though. Has Anselm Reyle been there?

“And the Expository Matter Is Skillfully Interwoven” — Raymond Pettibon in Berlin

Looker-Upper. R. Pettibon Exhibition at CFA Berlin

Looker-Upper is the title of a Raymond Pettibon exhibition currently showing at the Contemporary Fine Arts gallery in Berlin. The punk artist deluxe is in full effect, I’ve been impressed and well amused as ever. Below are a few shots from Pettibon’s artworks at CFA. The full range of work hanging at the show can be seen here. Runs until June 11th. Upstairs in the same building is an exhibition by Anselm Reyle. Pictures in the next post. Was an exclusively inspirational excursion that day.

Read This!

Two recommendations this week. Refreshed my subscription earlier this year, GOOD Magazine is always an enrichment. This time, GOOD studies “critical issues facing global cities by looking through the lens of Los Angeles. Can we turn this swollen beast into a healthy, 21st-century city?”. Great stories, illustrations and photography.

Next one is Juxtapoz, another favourite of ours, this time with the Art In The Streets issue, the title of an exhibition at the MoCA in LA (running from April until August 2011). The exhibition is a history lesson in graffiti and street art from the 1970s to the movement of today. And so is this issue of Juxtapoz. Read an interview by Shepard Fairey with the curators Aaron Rose, Jeffrey Deitch and Roger Gastman. And more interviews with and spotlights on Lee Quinones, one of the key figures of subway writing in New York, Jamie Reid, Fab 5 Freddy, Martha Cooper … Also a special piece with the unforgotton Margaret Kilgallen (her artwork on the cover), who died in 2001, a reprinted interview with her from the May/June 1999 issue. This and more awesomeness.

Concerning The UFO Sighting …

The concert of Sufjan Stevens in Berlin last Saturday has been my most enlightening moment in a long time. Really, I can’t remember last time a concert had to offer this kind of seriousness, deepness, vulnerability, fun, bliss and cheerfulness. Sufjan is a great songwriter, a personality with his unbelievably charming appearance. He played in a huge theatre/concert hall (Admiralspalast) with his band, consisting of ten people to perform his very dense and pompous music. All people were filled with happiness in the end after a two and a half hours show.

It was not only his music and the band (especially the two backing vocalists and dancing girls that I fell in love with…), but the amazing light show and the video animations by Deborah Johnson of Candystations (watch the video above!). All these components together made it a deeply impressive experience. Neon lights, shreds of paper, balloons … and Sufjan’s voice over the piano. Uh!

Hanging Out In The Sun

Valerie grinds the nowhere land. / Photo by Jenne

We’ve been out skatboarding the whole weekend. Some inspiring days and it felt like summer already. This picture I took captures that feeling perfectly. It’s Berlin well-known local Valerie “Valle” Rosomako with a Frontside Smith Grind in the late afternoon sun, somewhere on the field of the old Tempelhof Airport. This huge abandoned airfield is now a recreation area. That place in the picture above might turn into a concrete skatepark. It’s well needed, so we hope all the best …

The Dusty Cabinets #11 — Jenne G. with “Hip Love (The Low End Theory Mix)”

The Dusty Cabinets #11 by Jenne G. / © JB. 2011 / Photo & Art by UNTLD.

Following the ascending order of The Dusty Cabinets, #11 is next (cover above). Here is a fresh mix by Mr. JB. himself: JENNE GRABOWSKI. It took at least a year to finally record and release something new like this. But now, this extraordinary mix has been set straight for the sunny season. It’s the Low End Theory style, because it’s vinyl only, with a damaged mixer and completely worn-out needles. One take. No effects, no tricks. Pure love and energy!

Tracks by FaltyDL, J. Orbison, Boddika, George Fitzgerald, Pearson Sound, Julio Bashmore, Martyn, 2562, Skudge, Sepalcure and more …

But there is more. Already been posted a few weeks ago, this one comes from our good friend JOHN OSBORN who gave us a recording exclusively from his Jackson club night. It has been recorded at Cookies Berlin two months ago, where he opened up for his guest Paul Rose aka Scuba. Get these smooth and superb House tunes right here.
