Grey Skateboard Magazine— Issue #07

Our friends at Grey have released issue #07 of their superb little skateboard magazine, keeping their visual language straight and upfront. Here are a few pics including some pages of the special Polar Skateboards feature. Really dig the portrait photos accompanying the interviews and features, with that kind of exaggeratedly high contrast, most of them shot by Lex Kembery. Watch all pages over at Grey.

Pattern Recognition: Gerco De Ruijter

Once stumbled upon the amazing photographs of Gerco De Ruijter from a series called Baumschule, aerial photos from a tree farm. Although following a tight grid and pattern due to a well organized and defined cultural lanscape, these photos were also utterly distracting. Explore his recent series called Almost Nature.

“A series made at a conifers nursery in Boskoop, the Netherlands. All these little plants are clones, each color descends from the same source. They resemble the photographic pixel.”

There Are Dragons to Be Chased

Just found this pic of a really nice skull, who has been made alive with some color. It’s an older piece by Clark Goolsby, another great artist that we will feature in our upcoming issue. Happy Friday everyone!

Midnight On The Sun — Jay Howell and Mark Whalen (Kill Pixie) @ FFDG

Another note about our favourite artist Jay Howell here. Two reasons: he has a show coming up 18 Feb at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery, Midnight on the Sun. But again, San Francisco is not Berlin, so it will be hard for us to drop by spontaneously, watch some art and drink a few cold beverages with Jay and fellow artist Mark Whalen (who you probably know as Kill Pixie). Both show new pieces, Jay has 50 works on book pages plus a release of his newest zine called The Dark Wave published by Unpiano Books & Mt.St.Mtn.
The other reason is that Jay Howell will be featured with an interview in our next issue. Well, when the universe spends us some extra time, we finally could finish the work on #02… But we’re about to hire some befriended squirrels to help nibbling away the stuff.

J Dilla: Ruff Draft Beats

Last Friday was J Dilla day: Jay Dee aka J Dilla aka James Yancey, who passed away on the morning of February 10th, 2006 at the age of 32, had suffered from an incurable blood disease and was diagnosed with lupus. He left behind an incredible body of work, an amazing artist whose music you can rediscover at any time, in all these years to come. Stones Throw reissued his little known LP “Ruff Draft” in 2007 for the first time. The original has been released on vinyl only in 2003, and now, there is another reissue, the “Ruff Draft” instrumentals. We love it!

We Like This: Art by Erosie

Erosie — the dutch artist, who has its roots in Graffiti, does all the artwork for Martyn’s 3024 label. Here is a selection of recent 12″ sleeve designs with wild patterns and lots of colors. It has a recognizable signature style of Erosie’s art and also as 3024 releases. His large scale mural he painted on a huge wall in Poland also graced the recent cover of Martyn’s LP Ghost People for Brainfeeder.

DENA From The Block Plays Some “Games”

My great friend DENA is making some tight beats and is about to release her first 7″ soon. Last Monday she aired her tune “Games” with an impressive cool video. I remember playing a gig with her in 2010, she recently opened up for bands like Kakkmaddafakka or Das Racist and soon plays at YoYo @ Notting Hill Arts Club in London. If she continues like this, Dena will enter a new rocket and travel through space.

Her single “Games” will be released on Aerobic International.
