Lisa Hamilton

The art of Lisa Hamilton reminds of the folded paper pieces by Rena Begum. Both artists are moving around clear shapes and colors, some of Lisa’s work is more or less the 3D sculptural equivalent. We like!

18 Years of Rinse

London radio station and label Rinse is becoming a grown-up and celebrates its 18th birthday. Our JB. friends, chief designer Give Up Art and photographer Shaun Bloodworth have been responsible for the straight and clear visual language during the last years. Rinse started a series of short films in the run up to the 18th birthday weekend. Here is the landmark of 2006 featuring Stuart (Give Up Art).

NYC|C — NYC Skate Culture Art in Cologne

NYC|C is a public art initiative showing the influence of New York City’s skateboard culture. Starting today in Cologne, 21.09. — 18-10.2012, with photography, film screenings and lectures. Our friend Oli Tielsch (of Skateboard MSM) is involved in this whole project and sent a few shots of today — huge billboards with skate photos throughout the city of Cologne. How rad is that?
Check out NYC|C for more infos on the contributions of people like Johannes Wohnseifer, Mike O’Meally, Todd Jordan and all dates and actions around the exhibition.

Rena Begum

Recently discovered the art of Rena Begum and then found her work in real life on the abc fair the other day. She does some abstract and minimal, hard-edged geometrical work — simple shapes and bold colors. Some of her folded glossy paper pieces were shown and they would look rather well on my walls.

JB. — Featured in Skateboard MSM

Our State Of Now issue got nicely featured in the current issue of German skate magazine Skateboard MSM. Thanks to editor-in-chief and friend Oli Tielsch, who is also involved in a nice exhibition project starting in Cologne this weekend. More on that later. Get issue #314 to see JB. and read a short interview with my humble self… By the way, JB. also coincidentally stands for the initials of our forenames — Jenne and Barnabas (the other squirrel and maker of the mag!).

Jo Peters: “20.000 Leagues Under The Sea”

20 000 leagues under the sea – trailer 2 from Joe Collins on Vimeo.

Amazing new skateboard movie by our friend, the filmer Jonathan Peters. “20.000 Leagues Under The Sea” will be as special as their predecessors (“Objectif Lune”, “Journey To The Center Of The Earth”), capturing the core of Berlin’s vibrant and laid-back skate scene. Public premiere this saturday at Hasenheide skatepark in… em, Berlin!

Doug Aitken — NOW

Don’t know how I could miss to post the Doug Aitken (fine art installation artist) sculptures during our release process of JB. #02 — State Of Now issue. They are amazing, and at least the mirror dude should hang on the JB. walls here. So, please Mr. Aitken, get in touch so that this thing can come to its perfect home!

abc / Miss Read

A few fragmented impressions from the abc fair in Berlin from last weekend. Quite a few amazing works there, hard to tell all the names (I forgot to make notes…), but Gerold Miller, Kati Heck, Birgit Brenner, Marcel Frey, Timm Ulrichs (“Konzert der Türen”), Rana Begum (!) and some more good ones of course. In the end, the little hangover and the nice late summer day settled the race.
The book fair Miss Read was lacking a bit of power. Much more fun and cosiness while they were at the KW the years before. But good to meet Jan from Edition Taube at least!

Erik van der Weijde @ Chert, Berlin

The Dutch artist with quite a good sense of humour, Erik van der Weijde, founder of the publishing house 4478zine, has a show coming up at Chert Berlin this Friday, 14.09.2012. Also important to mention the great publishers Edition Taube at this point, who released a cool (risograph printed) zine with Erik: Deer Park.

“Erik van der Weijde´s work is bringing light to non-spectacular and common images of our daily life – the house we live in, the lamp illuminating the street, our touristic habits, family portraits and many other popular subjects.”

Gabriel Dubois — “Outsider Lines”

Canadian artist Gabriel Dubois has a feature in Color Magazine in the 10.3 issue. Gabriel, who is living in Berlin apparently, has transitioned from a graffiti artist to experimenting with new forms over the years: sculptures, structures, paintings, works on paper and print. We should probably track him down for JB. and find out more about his life and work in this city.

Illustrations by Edward Lear (1812-1888)

The British author and poet Edward Lear (1812 – 1888), who is best known for his nonsense poetry, also became a “ornithological draughtsman” when he started working as an illustrator for the Zoological Society of London. The Royal Society in London is currently showing a comprehensive collection of his scientific work. I wonder if there is a whole series of squirrels in his roster…

Geoff McFetridge — Around Us & Between Us

Always endless love at JB. for the work of Geoff McFetridge… There is a show coming up in London, starting 14.09.2012 at the Ivory & Black Gallery with new works — ten new paintings on canvas collectively entitled Around Us & Between Us. Basic shapes and colors, stripped down to essential, it seems that Geoff even needs less than essential to have everything in position.

Scottish-based artist David Mach creates huge sculptures with his old magazines. The sculptures span from the 1980s to today, room filling waves of magazines flowing through the space carrying everyday objects — cars, furniture and airplanes away. (via Juxtapoz)
