JB.2009—#04: “Where Do We Go From Here?” (The End of Print As We Know It…)

“Where Do We Go From Here?”
That’s what British editorial designer Jeremy Leslie asked in his lecture about the future of magazines, of independent publishing, of print. “It’s the end of print as we know it. So where do we go from here?” was the question to discuss and to be answered.
That was during Colophon 2009 festival (March 12-15, 2009) in Luxembourg, festival for independent publishers, editorial designers, editors, creatives or just magazine lovers who are into any kind of (independent) publications. It was actually the crucial moment for me to restart JB. Magazine soon, which still had been more like a vague plan to that date. And with the energy from this weekend it was for sure it would happen pretty fast.

Colophon was jam-packed with interesting things to do and see. Lectures, exhibitions, portfolio reviews, parties, the magazine shop … I met Casey Caplowe and Zach Frechette from GOOD Magazine (LA) and we spend a great weekend together, went sightseeing through Luxembourg and had a nice dinner with Simon Esterson, Art Director and co-owner of British design title Eye, met Sasha from Meatpaper (San Francisco). Also the guys René, Saint and Chema from LeCool (Barcelona), the lovely people from Mule Magazine (Chicago/Chattanooga) – Liz Tapp and Joseph Shipp, a kind of tiddly falafel dinner with the curators Jeremy Leslie and Andrew Losowsky and lots more.
Highlights of the weekend … uh, there have been many. But the talk of Joerg Koch from 032c magazine on Sunday morning was brilliant and highly entertaining (here’s an interview for meat magazine from that weekend). The presentation of Yummy mag by the founder Pascal Monfort was just hilarious. Funny guy! And not to forget the Gray Scale Bar by the finnish “trinkfest” boys from Kasino A4 in a 10 square meter space.
Great exhibitions in different places throughout the city by Volume, GOOD, Liebling Zeitung (where are they?), Sang Bleu (with live tattooing) and Karen.

Next Colophon will happen in March 2011. And I hope to be part of it once more.
